Educating and Improving Cancer Prevention

Support our Melbourne Home Appeal

OK Victoria, here is the deal.

If 2024 has taught us anything, it's that cancer doesn't discriminate.
Unlike many infectious or contagious diseases, long periods of isolation do not solve the problem, and in fact, statistics show that being surrounded by family and friends during treatment has proven to increase the likelihood of a positive outcome in many cancer patients.
Unfortunately, what we are seeing is increasing need for accommodation for families needing to travel from regional Victoria, as well as many families needing to travel to Melbourne from Tasmania, to undergo life-saving treatments and surgeries.
So, Cancer Prevention and Support Association is taking action!

We are seeking to open a long-term home, within 10 mins of the major hospitals in Melbourne (including the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre) in support of these families.

But we need the support of all Victorians.

We are asking you to help us bring this home to a reality as quickly as possible, by pledging
your support of just $20. No, we don't mean $20 per month, in fact, there are no ongoing obligations nor any sign ups.

We have all heard the 'for the cost of a cup of coffee a week, you can help save a ....'  NOPE! That is not our thing.

We are simply asking you to pledge just $20 as a one-off contribution.
Of course you can help support with more if you would like to. But what we are hoping for is that you can see the value and necessity in the support that we are able to provide these families, and that you are able help us achieve this with a small contribution that is affordable for most.

That's it!  No sign ups, No catches, and definitely No having to avoid eye contact with someone in the shopping centre as you are trying to go about your errands.

Please use 'MELBHOME' as your reference.
We use Westpac's secure Payway platform for all card payments.

Our homes.

For the majority of people staying with us, having to travel for treatment means leaving the majority of their support network for lengthy periods, leaving them having to face some really tough situations without anyone by their side. The alternative is having to pack up and move the whole family closer to the treating hospital, giving up work, home, and all their comforts.

Our homes are 2-3 bedroom units, apartments or stand alone homes that are conveniently located near many of the major hospitals across numerous capital cities. The homes are specifically intended for regional or remote cancer patients and their families to stay whilst undertaking treatments, enabling families to support one another without the financial burden of hotels (or having to sleep on Great Aunt Cheryl's futon with the kids climbing the walls).

We ensure our homes are comfortable and private, whilst creating a 'home away from home' atmosphere that encourages as much normality as possible. It's about supporting families to support one another and minimising as much disruption to their routines as possible.

Some of the things our families have valued most is not just a familiar face and loving support, but having someone they know being able to help with very basic tasks. Like cooking a fresh, hot meal, helping to bathe and wash their hair, or helping them out to the garden on a nice day. It's the little things that make a huge difference.

If using a card isn't for you, and you would prefer to contribute via BPAY, please drop us a line at appeals@cancerprevention.org.au and we will send you a unique BPAY reference, followed by a receipt. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
